What is Matcha?Matcha is a Japanese powdered green tea where the entire leaf is consumed, not just the infusion. It is derived from “matsu” meaning ground or powdered, and “cha” meaning tea. Because the entire leaf is ingested, matcha is very nutrient dense. One cup (about half a teaspoon) has the health benefits of 10 cups of green tea. The tea plants are shaded for 2-4 weeks prior to harvesting, this process boosts chlorophyll and L-theanine levels and results in significantly greener and smoother tasting tea leaves. Better quality matcha is handpicked, the delicate leaves are then lightly steamed to prevent oxidation, air dried, and stored at 32°F (0°C) to await grinding.
